Episode 183: Staying Grounded In Life and Career with Monique Shields

Episode 183: Staying Grounded In Life and Career with Monique Shields [A LinkedIn Live Event]

While the global pandemic has been a challenge to navigate, we have learned to adjust to a new way of life and mindset. This episode features the talented Monique Shields who is a Women’s Executive Coach and Founder of Seven Pines Leadership.

Together, Monique and I have a heart-centered conversation centered around how to balance life, career, motherhood, and leadership as women. We touch on taking risks, prioritizing our greatest needs and the stigmas relating to asking for help as a woman of color. We even dive into how the pandemic could be an opportunity for re-engineering our lives and Monique even shares her spirited journey through creating a well respected and fulfilling career for herself and guiding other women to do the same.

MONIQUE'S BIO:

I help ambitious women leaders move through fear and distraction to clarify, communicate and act on their unique definition of success without compromising what matters most. My truth is that I NEVER saw this life shift coming.  I started my career as a lost young English major in New York City.  In the wake of 2008, I gratefully found myself in an “I have no idea what she does for work” back-office job at an investment bank where I remained for six years feeling completely disconnected.

I was in hiding.  I was hiding in the superficial concerns of this vague notion of an “everyone” for whom I needed to “make sense” so that I could become “successful.”  And it was such an unnecessary and fruitless burden to carry.

When my husband and I moved to California, I decided it was my chance to start giving my “improbable” career ponderings a chance to breathe.  With very little time and lots of faith and intention, I dreamt up and materialized (I have the journal entries to prove it) my ideal team and role.  There was no job posting or recruiting process to step into.  I moved with expectation, I spoke with expectation and it’s because I’d spent time with my vision and my strengths… not everyone else’s opinions.

I was employee number seven at our mental health tech startup and I quickly became the Director of Coaching and then Director of Partnerships.  The exponential growth I experienced through the intensity of helping to build and grow a company – alongside becoming a mother and feeling the imperative to own my time – propelled me into now being at the helm of my own business.

Today, I get to spend each day having powerful conversations with powerful women – and earn a great living doing it.   I have to pinch myself.

QUOTABLES:

“There’s a way to step into yourself and your career.”

“You’re not supposed to have it all.”

“We assign ourselves things that we don’t have to.”

“Design it and make it SO!”

“Our dependency for not asking for help comes from a place of ‘I don’t deserve to receive.’”

The Final Five

  1. What is one book that has impacted your life? The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks
  2. If you could have brunch with 3 people, dead or alive: Madame CJ Walker, Josephine Baker and Issa Rae
  3. If I asked 10 people to describe you using: Calming, quirky, transparent and likes to laugh and connected.
  4. We are all “weird” in certain ways. What is something that makes you weird? I want to go deep with people really fast.
  5. What is one experience that has shaped who you are? Becoming a mother, especially the first year of motherhood. It has been the greatest catalyst of courage in my life.
