Episode 252: Beyond the Business Suit Conversations – Pastor Leonce Crump, Senior Pastor of Renovation Church
This month we are officially marking two years since so many of us in the U.S. went into quarantine due to COVID-19. At the time, we didn't know what to expect or for how long. Maybe a few days or weeks, we thought. It was unfathomable to think that the pandemic would endure for over two years; taking so many lives and disrupting and, in many cases, completely re-defining life as we knew it.
That first week of quarantine in March 2020 (March 16-20), I felt compelled to invite some of the people who I most trusted to share their wisdom with us and help prepare us for the uncertainty that was to come. The series of conversations were originally recorded live via Zoom and we had several people from our Beyond the Business Suit listener community join us during the week. Looking back, the guests' wisdom is still so relevant even today. So this month, we are taking a look back by re-releasing all five of those Beyond the Business Suit Conversations. Wherever you are in the world today, take some time to reflect on where you were then. And in listening to the replays, I hope they bring you enduring support, insight and perspective to help get you through any challenging and unprecedented time.
This first episode in this series is with Pastor Léonce Crump, Senior Pastor at my home church, Renovation Church which is located in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Pastor Léonce spoke to us about faith, leading through a crisis like this and why African-Americans specifically should be leading the way in how to respond to this pandemic.
ABOUT PASTOR CRUMP:
Léonce Crump Jr., is an author, international speaker, and the founder and senior pastor of Renovation Church in Atlanta. In 2006, Crump answered God’s call to relocate from Tennessee to Atlanta and begin the process of planting Renovation Church. He details the obstacles he and his family faced and the revelations he uncovered during this process in Renovate: Changing Who You Are by Loving Where You Are(Multnomah Books, Feb. 16, 2016). A champion for the Church’s participation in focused and intentional cultural renewal, Crump is the leading voice of a generation committed to operating as God’s redemptive agents in the earth.
“I hope to inspire you,” Crump says. “I hope you leave these few pages with a renewed sense of your ability to influence and shape culture, your ability and calling to renew this world and promote human flourishing for God’s glory and the common good. I hope you walk away from this book believing that cultural renewal is not only the responsibility of the Christian but also the most freeing way you can turn your quiet longing into discernible action.”
His unique background includes contacts from the world of professional sports and the music industry. At the University of Oklahoma, Crump was an All-American wrestler and defensive end for the Sooner football team; he went on to play professional football for the New Orleans Saints. He has been in ordained ministry for nine years and holds graduate degrees from the University of Tennessee and Resurgence Theological Training Center. He is currently a Master of Divinity student at Reformed Theological Seminary and a member of the Acts 29 church planting network. He and his wife, Breanna, reside in on the Eastside of Atlanta with their three daughters and son.
QUOTABLES
“There is nothing more resilient than the African-American soul. And so for us…to be panicked right now? We have generations of ancestors that have prepared us for this very moment with both the resilience of the African American spirit and the power of the ever present God.”
Renovation Church has live and streamed services on Sundays at 10:00 am ET. You can learn more about Renovation Church here (and you can find a list of sermons here).
